The Copa America is just a few days away and amidst the news of whether the Copa America will be held or not, the Peru head coach has started the preparations for the tournament.
On Wednesday, Peru head coach Ricardo Gareca named the 50 men preliminary squad for the Copa America. The highlighting news was that Guerrero was named into the 50 men list.
The former Bayern Munich striker Paolo Guerrero has not played for Peru since 2019. He was out of the squad and missed the World Cup qualifiers due to a serious knee injury.
The 37-year-old is the highest goal scorer for Peru. In his 102 international appearances, the striker has managed to score 38 goals. In the last month itself, Guerrero returned to action for the Brazilian club Internacional.
The Mexican-born striker Santiago Ormeno has also made it to the 50 men preliminary list. 27-year-old Santiago is the grandson of the former Peru national team goalkeeper Walter Ormeno. His form in recent times is incredible. He has scored 16 goals from 32 matches this season for the Mexican top-flight side, Puebla. One unknown fact about Santiago is that he is eligible to play for both countries.
Ricardo also mentioned that Alianza Lima forward Jefferson Farfan has recovered from a knee injury and will be part of the preliminary squad.
Copa America to Kick off on 13th July 2021
Copa America was originally scheduled to be hosted in 2020, but due to the pandemic situation, the tournament was postponed for a year.
Now the Copa America will kick off on 13th June with Argentina taking on Chile at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires. The Copa America final will take place on 10th July at Colombia’s Caribbean port city of Barranquilla.
Peru is one of the ten participating teams in Copa America 2021. They are placed in Group B and will face Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, and Ecuador.
